Mitchell Thorp made an indelible impression on his family, fellow athletes, fellow students, friends, and the greater community. Mitchell's courageous struggle for life embodied a "can do" attitude in all who knew him. Everyone supported him in his struggle. Mitchell stirred a spirit of volunteerism in the community and thousands responded. The City of Carlsbad named a baseball field after Mitchell, honoring his inspirational life journey. Thorp Field is located at Poinsettia Park in Carlsbad, California. 

​Since Mitchell used to play for Carlsbad Youth Baseball Association and La Costa Youth Organization, Mitchell Thorp Foundation honors youth who are involved in Carlsbad Youth Baseball Association and La Costa Youth Organization. As a way of carrying on Mitchell's legacy, his family has created the Mitchell Thorp Awards. The foundation honors youth who can't afford to the play baseball with financial assistance grants. 
This award honors a player who has demonstrated:

• A passion for the game

• Willingness to help others and to be a strong supportive teammate
• Leader who has earned the respect of their teammates and coaches through hard work and dedication to the game
• Strong academic and community involvement
